The Author of the Lottery is Shirley Jackson (1916-1965).
Jackson’s influences include horror writters like Stephen King, Richard Matheson, and Nigel Kneale.
Physically she was on the pudgy side and a heavy smoker, her husband was a critic, Stanley Edgar Hyman. Some believed that she was older than her husband. Due to records found after her death.
Jackson died at the age of 48, of heart failure while asleep. Her short story “The Lottery” first appeared inThe New Yorker, it received a lot of attention and pushed a lot of buttons.
Her style of writing in “The Lottery” was very eerie and dark. She really brings a curve ball at the end of the story that the reader will not expect.
Below are a couple other books by Jackson: From left to right; “The Memories of Shirley Jackson”, “The Sundial”. and “The Haunting of the Hill House”.
